Winter mysteriously transforms the city. Morning fog over the canals and
around the many bridges produces some enchanting scenes. Despite short
and cold days, you can warm up with plenty of local goodies and culture
in Bruges. The new, interactive 'Closer to Memling Experience' brings
you closer to the impressive works of the Bruges master. As night falls,
the city centre's landmark buildings are beautifully illuminated,
highlighting their architectural details. We would like to focus on some
novelties and also perennials that the winter season in Bruges has to
offer.
NEW MEMLING EXPERIENCE
What if you could step into the colourful world of painter Memling? From
12 December, children and adults alike with a rich imagination can dive
into the world of Hans Memling in the mediaeval attic of the St John's
Hospital Museum. What techniques did the master use to create the
illusion of perspective? What large and small stories are playing out in
the background? The magical symbiosis of his masterpieces and a dynamic
play of light and sound create an unforgettable experience, a journey
through time. Those who wish to delve further into the life and oeuvre
of the famous Flemish primitive can take a razor-sharp, close-up look at
the countless details in his works at closertomemling.be
ADDITIONAL VIRTUAL REALITY VIEWER
There is a viewer at the Municipal Theatre that transports visitors to
the beating financial heart of mediaeval Bruges (1453). An international
crowd of merchants, innkeepers and foreign exchange traders gathers in
the square in front of the Van der Beurze family inn and trades under
shelters and stalls. The location is known as the cradle of modern stock
exchange and banking. Along with the VR viewer at Jan Van Eyck Square
and the augmented reality table in the City Hall, a route through the
city is created that brings the mediaeval metropolis to life digitally.
All of this is part of the 'Lost Ports of the Zwin [5]' project.
